With heavy heart and deepest sadness, we announce that O. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Phil. Dr. h.c. (mult.) Karl Kaser passed away on 11 April 2022, after a two-year struggle with illness.

Karl Kaser, one of the most prominent scientists of Southeast European history and anthropology, left behind an opus of work that inspires generations of students and colleagues. Even amidst his struggle with illness, Karl Kaser passionately continued working, which resulted in the book published last year Femininities and Masculinities in the Digital Age: Realia and Utopia in the Balkans and South Caucasus.

In 2020 his colleagues, former students, and friends, prepared a Festschrift for Karl Kaser on the 50th anniversary of the Southeast European History and Anthropology working section, which he led, within the Institute of History, University of Graz. To read at length about his remarkable work and contribution, see the Festschrift Introduction.

Kaser was a long period member and collaborator of InASEA. He left an irreplaceable void.
